Located approximately 5 miles from Front Royal with lots of areas to camp throughout the beautiful George Washington National Forest, but the closest area to Front Royal is Elizabeth Furnace Recreation Area. Fishing is permitted in the forest following state regulations. More information may be obtained by contacting the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries at or 804-367-1000. Permits may be required. Please note: the address given here is actually that of Panorama Memorial Gardens, but that will take you to the GW forest entry point.
Happy Creek Trail
Non-motorized bikes only.

This trail is located adjacent to Commerce Avenue and runs 1/2 mile. It is designed for walkers, runners, bikers and hikers. It runs from Short Street along Front Street on the south side of Town to E. Main Street. The Town of Front Royal oversees the Trail.

Shenandoah National Park is a great place for all kinds of outdoor pursuits! You can drive leisurely along Skyline Drive to take in the incredible views. Or hike along some of the park's over 500 miles of hiking trails, walking along the Appalachian Trail or heading to a waterfall, swimming hole or a majestic mountain peak. Fishing is permitted (with a license) in the many streams. Lodging is available at the park's campgrounds (no RV hookups) , cabins and in-house rooms. Please check the website as they will offer different amenities. Reservations may be required. Open year round, weather permitting. An ideal setting for camping, hiking, fishing, picnicking or just plain relaxing, all within view of the magnificent Massanutten Mountain to the west and the fabled Shenandoah National Park to the east. There are several campgrounds to choose from. Reservations are required.

The ""fish trap"" access area, near Shelter 3 is suitable for wade fishing. Freshwater fishing available.
