Street Maintenance Division

The Street Maintenance Division is responsible for maintaining over 140 lane miles of streets throughout the Town and an additional 5 miles of alleys. To request road maintenance or report a problem, call the Public Works Center at (540) 635-7819.

Road Maintenance

The Town's maintenance operations are directed toward the safe travel of motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians and toward the preservation of the road surface. Maintenance is either performed by Public Works crews or contracted to larger construction firms. A list of the proposed projects can be found in the PMP Schedule.

Pothole Repair

Potholes in the roadway develop when a road surface becomes worn has suffered the effects of weather and traffic. Potholes are often created when moisture seeps into the pavement, freezes, expands and then thaws. The weakened pavement loosens and eventually crumbles and pops out. Repairs vary depending upon the problem causing the pothole. Most often, a pothole can be repaired with a patch of the asphalt. Sometimes, further measures are required depending upon the condition of the subsurface of the road.

Bridge Maintenance

The Town routinely inspects and maintains the eleven bridges and culvert bridges in our inventory. Maintenance includes clearing debris, installation of erosion control countermeasures, guardrail installation and repair, and general maintenance of the structures.

Street Sweeping

The Town sweeps the streets on a routine schedule to remove trash and debris from the curbline. Please contact the Public Works Center at (540) 635-7819 to find out when your area is next scheduled for sweeping.

Signage & Pavement Marking

The Town continually inspects the street signage and pavement markings to ensure that they comply with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices published by the Federal Highway Administration. Traffic signs and pavement markings provide instructions to motorists, warn drivers, and regulate traffic.

Town Property Maintenance

Town crews routinely maintain the vegetated islands and property. Mowing and weed removal promote safe and pleasant areas of Town citizens.

Sidewalks, Trails, & Crosswalks

Pedestrian and bicycle traffic is an integral component of the Town's overall transportation system. Sidewalks are typically constructed of concrete and trails are typically asphalt. The first priority of sidewalk and trail maintenance is to remove trip hazards that may develop. In the older areas of the Town, installation of sidewalk ramps conforming to the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act is an ongoing program by the Town to the extent that funds are available.

Stormwater Management

The Town maintains public stormwater conveyance systems generally located adjacent to Town roads. Private drainage systems are the responsibility of the property owner or homeowner's association. Town crews will remove debris from clogged inlets and pipes and remove vegetation from ditches. Residents are reminded to not dump leaves, grass clippings, and debris in stormsewer inlets.

Dead Animal Removal

Public Works collects dead animals in the Town's Right-of-Way. The Town will not enter private property to remove dead animals. Please contact the Public Works Center to report a dead animal.

Snow & Ice Removal

The Streets Maintenance Division is prepared to clear and treat roads when snowfall occurs. Because salt needs to be spread on top of snow and ice to be effective, crews begin treating road surfaces when accumulation begins. Priority is assigned to clearing major arterial and collector roads. Motorists are reminded to yield to snow removal trucks and never follow too closely to spreaders.
