Water & Sewer Line Maintenance
The Water & Sewer Line Maintenance Division is responsible for the installation and maintenance of all water and sewer mains, manholes, service connections, and fire hydrants in the Town Utility Service Area. The Division will respond to utility service requests submitted to (540) 636-6338 during business hours or (540) 635-2111 after hours.

Sewer Backups
The Division routinely cleans and inspects the sanitary sewer mains the more than 65 miles of line in the Town's sewer system. However, root intrusion, grease buildup, or significant rainstorms can result in sewer backups into your home. Please contact us at (540) 636-6338 to investigate backups. If you need to make a property damage claim, please contact the Department of Human Resources at (540) 635-3929.

Infiltration & Inflow (I&I)
I&I is the introduction of groundwater or stormwater into the sanitary sewer collection system. This additional water in the sewer system reduces the carrying capacity of the sewer pipes, which results in surcharging of the system. Sewer backups and unnecessary treatment of clean water at the waste water treatment plant results from I&I. The Division is actively inspecting the sewer system to detect locations where "clean" water enters the sewers. This is done by both "smoke testing" the pipes and visually inspecting with a video inspection device.

Water Main Breaks
Due to temperature fluctuations, breaks in the Town's water mains can occur. These primarily occur during very cold periods, but warm, dry conditions can also result in breaks due to the ground shifting or settling. Break repairs usually take six to eight hours to repair after the break has been identified. We appreciate your patience during repairs when water service is interrupted to your home or business.
If you notice water flowing through road during periods of no rain, please contact the Department of Public Works at (540) 636-6338 or the Police Department at (540) 635-2111.

Construction Standards
The Town has developed a set of Water and Sewer Construction Standards. The specification manual is available for $15 from the Purchasing Agent in the Business Office located at 15 N. Royal Avenue. The construction standard drawings are available online in the "Water & Sewer Design" section of the website.

Billing Inquiries
Should you have questions regarding your utility bill, please contact the Finance Department at (540) 635-7799.
|
|
Meter Testing
Water meter tests can be requested by contacting the Finance Department at (540) 635-7799 or visiting the Business Office at 15 North Royal Avenue, across the street from Town Hall. The first requested test is performed free of charge, with any subsequent tests completed at a $25 charge.

|
Hydrant Flushing
Periodically, the Division will flush the water distribution system to "clean" the lines. Notifications in the local newspapers, the community access television channel, and this website will provide the dates when this is to occur. When the lines are flushed, your home will temporarily experience very low water pressure. Your faucets and showers will then have some air in the system as the pressure returns to its normal level.

Water & Sewer Connection Fees
The Town has established connection fees for new water and sewer service installations. A list of the Connection Fees is available from the Planning & Zoning Department.
